When Duty Calls
Raising My Family While Serving My Country
“Airborne, All the Way, COL Rogers! Carol’s book and story confirms why so many of us sought her out for mentorship and guidance as we sought our way forward. Her book depicts so many examples of tenacity, persistence, and demand for equality, making it a must-read for us all to live by. Any young officer, male or female, who reads this will be inspired to never quit or accept “you can’t” for an answer. I was impressed with her before, but after reading this book, I see all the challenges, personal and professional, she overcame to be such a great inspiration to all of us and for her children to emulate.” MG Robert L. Walter, Jr, US Army (RET)
Hope, Resilience, and Overcoming Adversity
I have spent almost eight years writing, editing, and rewriting my book, “When Duty Calls, Raising My Family While Serving My Country”. It is not about military strategy but about how inspired by my father’s legacy, recently separated from my first husband, raising three kids, and struggling financially to keep my head above water, I enlisted in the Women’s Army Corps in 1975. I fortunately rose through the ranks to Colonel, culminating with a wartime command in Iraq (of the Joint Interrogation and Debriefing Center) before retiring in 2007. During those years, I encountered challenges as a mother, as a single parent, as a female officer in a male-dominated organization, and as a member of the Armed Forces following orders that I now, through hindsight, question. I candidly discuss all these challenges, the mistakes I made, the coping mechanisms I learned, and the wisdom I collected. I am proud of my service to my country.

Colonel Carol Rogers
I am an active 70-something, who recently added “get this book published” to my growing to-do list. (Shouldn’t this list be shrinking?) I spend my days at my H.I.I.T classes (and my nights recovering). I play my magic piano (that makes me sound way better than I am). I’m still trying to have meaningful relationships with my 5 kids and their kids, who I love dearly, especially my newest two granddaughters, who really challenge me (hence the HIIT classes) and bring me joy. Finally, since I want to make my third time a charm, I work on this whole compromise business with my loving husband of eight years.

What Readers Are Saying About When Duty Calls
Ret. Col. Carol Rogers’ gripping memoir chronicles her unlikely journey from struggling single mother to high-ranking Army Intelligence Colonel in wartime Iraq. Her accounts are detailed and vivid; you feel alongside Rogers as she takes her first terrifying jumps out of a plane (while her kids watch!) or witnesses the birth of a grandchild. With striking honesty and vulnerability, she delves into her conflicting feelings of pride and guilt at her successes at work and failures at home, sometimes questioning if it was all worth it. Roger’s story is as relatable as it is awe-inspiring. Whether you are a working parent, a single serviceman, or a history student, When Duty Calls is a must-read.

A wonderful true story that exemplifies the conflicts and competing struggles addressed in a life of achievement; the wounds attained along the way; and the rewards for hard work and perseverance. It is also a primer on leadership that is a riveting read and has something to which almost everyone can relate. You won’t put it down!
COL (RET) Stephen Weisel
True Grit. These are the words that come to mind after reading this story of a woman who accepted no limits and knew no bounds. With tenacious determination, she courageously pursued her dreams and desires to live a life of mission and purpose with the US Army. From the Reserves to the Pentagon and across the world, Carol lived out her honor throughout the 32 years of service she gave to our country, impacting the lives of all those around her. She left her mark of leadership throughout her service, most notably at Abu Ghraib, Saddam Hussein’s “death camp” in Iraq. Carol’s persistence, fortitude, extraordinary courage, and commitment to this nation brought about radical change that was both effective and humane for the interrogation and debriefing of the prisoners at Abu Ghraib. Amazing! Likewise, Carol experienced heartbreak and misfortune in her personal life but she rose above her pain with a spirit of triumph, holding tight to her commitment to faith, family, and the purpose of her mission. When duty called, Carol stepped up. She demonstrated characteristics of strength, adaptability, hard work, creativity, perseverance, and love for mankind that are an inspiration to us all.

I cannot stop ordering this magnificent well-written book for my family and friends. Reliving the struggles women have faced in trying to meet their potential, when faced with numerous societal impediments. Her story relates the challenges in her life that made her stronger and the disappointments that come with the sacrifices we make for our country.

Courage, strong-mindedness, strength of faith and character, firmness of purpose, and an inherent humbleness support Col. Carol Rogers’ ascent up the ranks in the predominantly men’s world of the military as well as in her duties as a single mom to her five children. She excels in her talents as a problem solver and in her ability to bring disparate teams together for a common good. She also reveals a vulnerability and humility in her candor regarding the difficulties and failures on both fronts. This motivational memoir is for anyone balancing career and family, especially those in the military. It is also an engaging and informative read for the rest of us who haven’t a clue!
